A summary from the outgoing President Martin A. Gotel, October 2016.

Dear Members:

It is time for a change and I have decided to not seek re-election for the Club Presidency. I will be nominating Chris Brydon who will be an excellent choice.

I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Meraloma Club President and have been blessed to have been able to serve the Club in that capacity for (18) of the last (20) years.

October 3rd 2016 was my last Executive meeting as President and I said at that meeting as I reiterate now we the Meraloma Club have an excellent group of people on our Executive and it has been a privilege to work with them. Being President is not difficult when you are surrounded with wonderful committed people. I want to thank all the Club Officers and Sport VP’S for their selfless contribution to the success of the Club.

I also want to thank all the Club volunteers, section committee members, coaches, managers and all our players for making the Meraloma Club the great Club it is.

We the Meraloma Club will be inducted into the BC Football Hall of Fame on October 22nd 2016 at the BC Lions game. For the new members who are not aware of the Meraloma Football history purchase a copy of the Meraloma Club history book Once a Mermaid. This acknowledgement of our Club is well over due and fitting. We have various Club Members already in the BC Football Hall of Fame. I want to extend on behalf of the Meraloma Club our deep appreciation to Ray Crawford who spearheaded this project. Also we thank David Boyd, Ed Murray and Gary Cohen. Tom Keast and Doug Sturrock provided Ray with all the material through the Club History book. Gentlemen a huge thank you.

We the Meraloma Club have been granted a Members Only Liquor Licence which is another historic moment for our Club. I want to thank Connie Brown, Kate Jones and Chris Brydon for all the hours and dedication they have put into attaining us this fantastic opportunity for our Club and its members. We are blessed with such wonderful people who championed this effort.

We also thank and acknowledge the support of the Parks Board Commissioners, the VPD, City Council and the BC Liquor Board. This is a testament to the great respect we the Meraloma Club have earned over 93 years. Let us not forget all the Club members during that time who contributed to the success of the Meraloma Club. We have come a long way since the young water polo team named the Mermaids and their vision. To be a Meraloma is a privilege and with it are expectations. Everyone of us is obliged to represent ourselves with dignity, pride and above all commitment to success. Whether you are on the field, in the clubhouse or in public your reputation must not fail us. Be considerate, helpful and play hard. We are all brothers and sisters  and the Meraloma Club is our family. Orange and black are the colours which fill our veins. Never forget.

I want to acknowledge all our International players who grace the International Boards. All the Club persons who have won the Club’s major awards over the years.

We are more than an athletic club. We are a cornerstone of the community who have earned our reputation by being good neighbours and charitable. Whenever we need support you the members give generously. Please continue this great work.

I could go on and on when I start talking about the Meraloma Club because I am passionate about this Club and its Members. Before I sign off I would like to express my deep gratitude to all the past and present members who have given me their support and guidance over all these years. Thank you.
